Connect Mixpanel

Create a read-only service account and find your project ID.

Surfil reads unique users and event counts from your own Mixpanel project with a service account that can only read. Start from Product analytics.

  1. Create a service account

In Mixpanel open Organization settings, then Service accounts, and add one. Give it the Analyst role on your project, which can read reports and change nothing.

  2. Copy the username and the secret

Mixpanel shows the secret once, so copy it before you close the window. The username looks like this: name.hash.mp-service-account.

  3. Find the project ID

Open Project settings. The project ID is a plain number.

  4. Paste and connect

In Key, paste the account as username:secret, with a colon between the two. Add the Project ID and press Connect.

US host only

Surfil reads Mixpanel's US address. A project stored in the EU or India data region cannot be read yet.

Analyst role

Analyst is enough to read. Never give the account an Admin or Owner role.

Core event

Used the product: the event that gives weekly and monthly active users.

Sign-up event

Optional: the event for a new account. It gives new users and week 4 returns.

Until you save a core event, the first check reads the page view event Mixpanel records by default. The event list comes from the events your project recorded recently.

When it does not connect

That does not look like a Mixpanel service account. Paste it as username:secret.

One line, a colon between them and no spaces.

Mixpanel did not accept that service account for this project.

Check the project ID, and that the account was added to that project with the Analyst role. If your project is in the EU or India region, it is not readable yet.

Mixpanel could not find that event.

The check reads one event. If your project does not record page views, ask Support to set your core event for you.

Mixpanel says this project's plan does not include API access.

Reading reports needs a Mixpanel plan that includes the Query API. Check your plan in Mixpanel.

Mixpanel could not find that project. Check the project ID.

It is a number, not the project name.

Mixpanel would not list your events with the saved key

Check the Analyst role, then use Reconnect, or choose Not listed, type it and type the event name.

Mixpanel is limiting requests right now.

Wait a few minutes and press Connect or Test now again.

Vendor menus change. These steps were last checked against Surfil's connector page on 7 October 2026.
