Connect PostHog

Create a read-only personal API key and find your project ID and host.

Surfil reads weekly and monthly active users and event counts from your own PostHog project, so you can see how many people use what you built. You paste a personal API key, the project ID and, if needed, the host. Start from Product analytics and choose PostHog.

  1. Create a personal API key

In PostHog open your account menu, then Personal API keys, and create one. It starts with phx_. Allow read on Event definitions, Insights and User, and leave every write option off.

  2. Find the project ID

Open Project settings. The project ID is a plain number, not the project name.

  3. Choose the host

Leave Host (optional) blank for the US cloud. For the EU cloud use https://eu.posthog.com. A self-hosted PostHog needs its public https address.

  4. Paste and connect

Paste the Key and the Project ID, add the host if you need one, and press Connect. Then pick your events from the list we read from your project.

Core event

Used the product: the event that gives weekly and monthly active users.

Sign-up event

Optional: the event for a new account. It gives new users in 28 days.

Retention and 7-day activation are not read from PostHog. A host that is not a public https address is not used, and the check then runs against the US cloud. The older phc_ key prefix is still accepted.

When it does not connect

That does not look like a PostHog personal API key. It starts with phx_ or phc_.

Copy the whole key from Personal API keys. A key from any other screen will not read your project.

PostHog did not accept that key. Check that you copied all of it.

Check that the key was made on the same PostHog account and region as your project. If it still fails, make a new key with the scopes above.

That does not look like a PostHog project ID

The project ID is a plain number from Project settings, not the project name.

We could not reach PostHog just now. Try again in a minute.

If you host PostHog yourself, check that the address is public and uses https.

PostHog would not list your events with the saved key

The key needs read access to Event definitions. Make a key with that scope and use Reconnect, or choose Not listed, type it and type the event name. Everything else keeps working.

Vendor menus change. These steps were last checked against Surfil's connector page on 7 October 2026.
