# Google Discover on desktop has disappeared, and Google is silent

## The short answer

Google Discover no longer appears on the desktop version of Google.com, according to Search Engine Roundtable's 17 September 2026 report. The feed was tested in 2023, announced for 2025 and began rolling out, but has been missing for several months. The report cites a post listing every country where it worked as shut down, and offers no reason.

## Key takeaways

- Search Engine Roundtable reported on 17 September 2026 that Discover has disappeared from the desktop interface of Google.com after several months.
- Google tested Discover on desktop in 2023, announced it for 2025 and began rolling it out, but the feature did not persist.
- An X post by Damien Andell, cited by the report, says Google shut down desktop Discover in every country where it was working, with June and September 2026 country lists.
- The report gives no explanation for the removal, and it does not cite a Google statement, so the reason and whether the feed returns are both unknown.

Search Engine Roundtable reported on 17 September 2026 that Google Discover has disappeared from
the desktop interface of Google.com. Visiting the homepage now shows only a large search box with
a lot of white space, where a comparison image from May of last year showed Discover content
below the search interface.

## Where did desktop Discover go?

Google tested Discover on desktop in 2023 and announced it was coming in 2025. It then began
rolling it out on the desktop interface of Google.com, but the feature did not persist. According
to the report, Discover on desktop has been gone for several months.

The earlier coverage fills in the timeline. On 9 April 2025, a Googler's slide at the Search
Central Live event in Madrid said Discover was "expanding surfaces" to "desktop Search." By 19 May
2025 the feed had started rolling out on the desktop home page in many countries and regions.
It was fully available in New Zealand, and in the US and Australia only on some accounts.

## Is it gone everywhere?

The report cites a post on X by Damien Andell saying Google has shut down Discover on desktop in
all the countries where it was working. The post lists the countries where the
feature worked in June 2026 and the countries where it no longer works in September 2026. Andell is the same person whose post helped surface the 2025 rollout. His
list is a third-party observation, not a Google statement.

## Why does it matter for SEO?

The report does not give a reason for the removal, does not quote Google, and does not say
whether the feed will return, so none of those should be assumed. What it does establish is
narrow: one Google surface that had been rolled out to desktop is no longer visible there.

The desktop feed was a late addition, and the rules for appearing in
Discover did not depend on it. Google's documentation says content is automatically eligible if
it is indexed and meets Discover's content policies, and that "no special tags or structured data
are required." For the technical side, see our
[Discover eligibility requirements report](/blog/discover-technical-eligibility-requirements).

## What to check in Search Console

Anyone who counted desktop Discover as a traffic source should check their own
[Search Console](/topics/search-console) data before drawing conclusions:

- Open the Discover performance report, which Google says shows clicks, impressions and CTR for
content that appeared in Discover, with a default range of the last three months. It only appears once a property
passes a minimum number of Discover impressions.
- Compare a period from before June 2026 with September 2026, and look for a step change rather
  than a gradual decline.
- Treat any explanation for the change as unconfirmed until Google speaks.

## Common questions

### Did Google announce that it removed Discover from desktop?

The Search Engine Roundtable report does not cite any Google announcement or statement. The claim that Google shut the feature down comes from an X post by Damien Andell, and the report itself asks where it went and why it was removed.

### Does this affect Discover on mobile?

The report covers only the desktop interface of Google.com and says nothing about mobile Discover. Treat the mobile feed as unchanged unless Google says otherwise, and read mobile and desktop numbers separately.
