# AI Mode passed 200 countries and territories, and entered the EU

## The short answer

Google expanded AI Mode to more than 40 new countries and territories and more than 35 new languages, taking total coverage past 200 countries and territories, "including many across Europe." The published country list includes EU members such as Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland. France was not on it.

## Key takeaways

- Google added more than 35 new languages and more than 40 new countries and territories to AI Mode, taking total coverage past 200.
- Google said the expansion included many countries across Europe, and the published list includes Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland.
- France was not on the country list at this point, which is why its later AI Mode launch became a separate story.
- Google said AI Mode questions were nearly three times longer than traditional searches, and credited its Gemini models for the language reach.
- The announcement predates this site's usual 2026 coverage window and is included here as context for later AI Mode stories.

Google pushed AI Mode past 200 countries and territories in one release on 7 October 2025, adding
more than 35 new languages and more than 40 new countries and territories. The announcement, by
Hema Budaraju, Google's VP of Product Management for Search, said the new coverage included "many
across Europe."

## What actually shipped

The release was a coverage expansion, not a redesign. Google said AI Mode runs on custom Gemini
models for Search, and that their reasoning and multimodal understanding are what let it handle
the subtleties of local languages. The rollout was gradual, expanding "over the next week."

Search Engine Roundtable published the full lists two days later. The supported languages include
German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Dutch, Swedish and Greek alongside Arabic, Hindi, Japanese and
Vietnamese. The country list includes EU members such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Austria,
Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden. Google's Rajan Patel put the language count at 36 in his own
post on X.

One usage figure came with the news: Google said people were asking questions in AI Mode that are
nearly three times longer than traditional searches.

## What was missing

France does not appear on the published country list. Its AI Mode launch came later, which we covered in
[French publishers' complaint over AI Mode](/news/ai-mode-france-publisher-terms). Anyone
tracking AI Mode by country should check the list rather than assume "Europe" meant every EU
member.

## What new markets should check

Google's AI features documentation is short on requirements. To appear as a supporting link in AI
Mode, a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet," and
Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations. AI Mode may also use
"query fan-out," issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one answer.

Two practical points follow. First, traffic from AI Mode is not reported separately: Google says it
is included in the Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type. Second, the
existing controls still apply: `nosnippet`, `data-nosnippet`, `max-snippet` and `noindex` limit
what Google can show from a page in AI features too.

## Why we care

A feature reaching 40 new countries changes very little for any single publisher's traffic on
day one. What it changes is scope. Once AI Mode operates inside the EU, questions about publisher
opt-outs, citation transparency and compensation have a live jurisdiction to answer to, and that
story continued through 2026. For how AI Mode sessions behaved once users had it, see
[Semrush's AI Mode adoption and zero-click data](/blog/google-ai-mode-adoption-and-zero-click-semrush).

## Common questions

### Did this expansion bring AI Mode to the European Union?

Yes. Google said the new coverage included many countries across Europe, and Search Engine Roundtable's published list includes EU members such as Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland. France was not on the list.

### Do sites need to do anything to appear in AI Mode in the new markets?

Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.

### Why is a 2025 story on a site that mostly covers 2026?

Because later AI Mode stories on this site, including its French launch and advertising expansion in 2026, build on this as the point AI Mode became a genuinely global product rather than a US-first experiment.
