# What correlates with AI brand mentions? Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study

## The short answer

Ahrefs' December 2025 study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlate with AI mentions at 0.656 to 0.709, far above backlinks at roughly 0.20 to 0.28. YouTube mentions correlated highest, near 0.74. Ahrefs itself warns correlation is not causation, so these figures do not show that raising mentions causes visibility.

## Key takeaways

- Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlated with AI mentions at 0.664 in ChatGPT, 0.709 in AI Mode and 0.656 in AI Overviews.
- YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation of any metric, at roughly 0.737 in ChatGPT, 0.740 in AI Mode and 0.712 in AI Overviews.
- Backlink counts correlated at only about 0.20 to 0.28, and Domain Rating at 0.266 to 0.326, so link metrics were weak predictors here.
- Ahrefs states that correlation is not causation and that improving these metrics will not automatically boost AI visibility.
- Every brand in the sample had a Domain Rating above 40, so the results say little about small or new sites.

Advice on getting a brand named by AI assistants usually rests on anecdote. Ahrefs published one of
the larger attempts to measure it: a correlation study of about 75,000 brands, released on 12
December 2025 and written by Louise Linehan. This piece reports what that study did and found, and
what it cannot show. It sits within [AI search](/topics/ai-search) coverage.

## What did Ahrefs measure?

Ahrefs wanted to know which metrics move together with brand mentions across three surfaces:
ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. It selected domains with a Domain Rating above 40,
took each one's highest-volume keyword with a monthly volume of at least 800, and used its Brand
Radar tool to count mentions across millions of AI responses. Correlations are Spearman
coefficients. Ahrefs says ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity share one question pool, while
AI Overviews and AI Mode share another.

## Which metrics correlated most?

Off-site brand signals led. YouTube mentions were highest at roughly 0.74, branded web mentions
followed at 0.656 to 0.709, and branded anchors at 0.511 to 0.628. Branded search volume ranged
from 0.352 to 0.466.

Ahrefs defines a YouTube mention as any time a brand name appears in a video title, transcript or
description, and YouTube mention impressions as those mentions weighted by views. Mention count
edged out the view-weighted figure, which Ahrefs reads as breadth mattering slightly more than
reach. The pattern was not confined to Google's surfaces: YouTube is ChatGPT's sixth most-cited
domain, and ChatGPT showed almost identical YouTube correlations.

Link and size metrics trailed. Domain Rating ran from 0.266 to 0.326 and backlink counts roughly
0.20 to 0.28. The number of site pages correlated at about 0.194, which Ahrefs describes as almost
no relationship between content volume and AI visibility.

## Do the three surfaces agree?

Mostly. Brand mention counts correlated strongly between platforms: 0.821 between AI Overviews and
AI Mode, 0.769 between AI Mode and ChatGPT, and 0.749 between AI Overviews and ChatGPT. The same
brands tend to appear everywhere.

The differences sit at the margins. AI Mode showed the highest correlations with brand signals,
including branded traffic at 0.357 against 0.235 in ChatGPT and 0.274 in AI Overviews, and it is
the only surface where branded anchors crossed 0.6. Ahrefs calls AI Mode a kind of "consensus
engine" for brands people already know. ChatGPT correlated least with classic authority metrics,
and Ahrefs suggests it may be the easier entry point for a brand with modest search volume and
links. AI Overviews tracked Domain Rating more closely than the other two.

## Do mentions cause visibility?

No, and Ahrefs says so: "correlation isn't causation." A well-known brand is likely to be
discussed on the web, covered on YouTube and cited by AI at once, so one hidden factor could drive
every column. The study also counts mentions of brands, not citations of pages, so it does not
show that a given URL will be cited. For that question see this site's write-up of the
[content length correlation](/blog/content-length-ranking-citation-correlation).

## What publishers should take

Treat it as a hypothesis generator. The consistent gap between mention-type signals and link
metrics is worth testing on your own brand, for example by tracking whether third-party coverage
precedes changes in AI mentions. Do not treat 0.7 as a recipe. The sample excludes low-authority
domains, and Ahrefs' own tool produced the data.

For Google's two surfaces there is also an official baseline. Google's AI features documentation
says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode," and that sites
appearing in those features are counted in overall search traffic in Search Console's Performance
report. The page-level work Google describes, crawlable pages, internal links and text content,
still applies. How far AI Overview citations overlap with organic rankings is a separate question, covered in
the report on [AI Overview citation source overlap](/blog/ai-overview-citation-source-overlap).
